Featured Product: R&R Luxury Black Soap
By Nini Kunu
Despite the plethora of alarmist beauty articles that condition us to believe that germs sit
on bar soaps, and inform us of more exciting, specialty products in the beauty space, black soap
is back and chicer than ever.
Dominating liquid soaps and body washes we have come to rely on,
black soap has slipped back into our beauty routines to tick all our boxes. Black soap is made
from the ash of locally harvested plants and barks such as plantain, cocoa pods, palm tree leaves
and shea tree bark and infused with natural oils, which makes it 100% organic.
In a recent interview with InStyle, model Jourdan Dunn credited this drugstore fave with clearing her
breakouts. So, if you are thinking of taking the plunge and making the switch from liquid soaps
to black soap, here are few more reasons why it needs to make a big comeback to your skincare
1. It is cool for all skin types
Black soap is non-comedogenic so it can basically be used for any type of skin (normal,
combination or oily) and it is gentle enough to use on the face, hands and body.
2. It is a great anti-ageing product
Black soap is formulated to be hydrating and tackle signs of dullness, thus, it can be just as
preventative as it is curative, in terms of signs of aging. It is also made up of various natural oils
that help the skin retain moisture and blur the look of fine lines.
3. It leaves skin feeling hydrated
Active ingredients like shea butter, cocoa and coconut oil, provide additional moisture for dry
skin and help to regulate overly active oil glands.
4. It is anti-inflammatory and helps soothe irritation
The plantain skins in black soap are rich in vitamins A and E, which are antioxidants and help
prevent inflammatory conditions like rosacea. In addition, shea butter helps to soothe itchiness
and irritation caused by eczema and other skin allergies.
5. It helps fight acne and improves skin texture
Authentic black soap is naturally sourced and unrefined, so it doesn’t have a smooth finish and is
able to act as a natural exfoliant, getting rid of dead skin cells and clogged pores.
6. It may help reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks
The shea butter and vitamin E contained in black soap, are a much healthier way to reduce
redness and overall appearance of stretch marks and other scars, than cult favourites like retinol.
7. It makes a great natural shampoo
With exfoliating properties and natural oils and butters that are kind to more sensitive skin, black
soap gently cleanses the hair and scalp without stripping away natural oils.
8. It can be used as a makeup remover
The oils in black soap are perfect for getting rid of stubborn makeup with ease. Using black soap
to take off make up also eliminates the risk of tearing delicate skin cells on the face.
