For those who aren’t up to speed on the new generation of African fashion movers and shakers, we’ll give you the scoop on 27 year old Nigerian Stylist Ugo Mozie.
Born in Enugu, Nigeria, and raised in Houston, Ugo Mozie entered the fashion industry at the age of 18 where he co-launched a menswear brand called Aston Mozie with partner Quinn Aston during New York Fashion Week. After this, he debuted a hat line that was spotted on celebrities like Celine Dion. From designing, he went into styling (all our fav celebs), which then led to costume design and creative direction (Alexa play Wizkid’s ‘Come Closer’). Now what we love about Mozie is his loyalty to our African culture. Ugo goes hard for the culture and uses his platform to spotlight African talent. His Diasporan flavour is a perfect example of contemporary African fashion. Ugo is now set to launch his non-profit WANA ‘We Are New Africa’ where he aims to educate, empower and inspire African youth.
When asked how his background as a Nigerian man contributed to his style and success in the US, Mozie says:
“My background as a Nigerian man contributed a great deal to my style and my aesthetic and the way I think, the way I work. The confidence I have from knowing where I came from and who I am plays a large role in the way my clients relate to me and also respect me. As of recent, I’ve been the go-to person for African fashion, high African style, and high-level African taste and I feel like people are now understanding that you can get quality and great products out of Africa as well from what I’ve been putting out and showing in the media.” [via Vibe.com]
