7 Reasons Why Coconut Oil is Essential to Your Skin and Hair routines

By Nini Kunu

Coconut oil has quickly become a buzzword in the beauty space and a staple and absolute favourite for beauty enthusiasts all over the world, and for good reason. According to skincare experts, and based on the results of years of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology, 100% virgin coconut oil contains a unique combination of fatty acids, which contain linoleum and lauric acids. These are not the big, scary, direct acids your friends warned you against, we like these ones. Linoleic acid is beneficial for acne-prone skin and lauric acid offers additional hydration and protects the skin against microbes. So, here are ten other reasons to slather on some trusty, old, coconut oil;

It is incredibly accessible

There is an abundance of coconut oil and coconut oil products on the market, which also makes it ridiculously affordable.

It is a great multi-functional, hybrid product

Coconut oil can be used to hydrate the scalp and prevent dandruff and to provide long-lasting hydration to the skin, face and body.

It acts as an effective, oil-based cleanser

Oil-based cleansers like coconut oil are more gentle on the skin, and cling to dirt particles and breakdown eye makeup significantly more easily than water-based soaps and cleansers. Oil-based cleansers also work to repair the skin’s natural moisture barrier while also preventing water loss while water-based soaps tend to strip the skin of its natural moisturizing factors.

It acts as a great base for a natural face mask

Use 100% virgin coconut oil as the base of your next do-it-yourself face mask to add that extra bit of hydration to your routine. My favourite quick and effective mask to do on the weekends is to add a tablespoon of coconut oil to a tablespoon of natural honey in a bowl, and add about a pinch each of cinnamon and turmeric plus the zest of one lemon. I mix all the ingredients together until it becomes like a paste and then, I apply this to a clean, dry face and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes and rinse off with warm water.

It acts as an excellent makeup remover

Coconut oil breaks down eye makeup more easily than water-based soaps and is gentle and moisturizing enough to double-up as an eye cream.

It serves as cuticle oil

Coconut oil is an essential add-on to your at-home manicure routine. It helps soften cuticle and this makes pulling it off your nail easier, it can also be used to hydrate your nail beds.

It serves as a great base to shave your legs

Shaving your legs does not have to be a hassle, swap your water-based cleansers for coconut oil to reduce friction and prevent texture and razor burns.
